Hi all, Doriana’s QA session is now open. We’ve opened a bit early to give her a head start, but if you’re here already feel free to join in.
Hey Doriana, how’s it going? I’ll leave you alone for a bit before I ask any questions, so you can start answering earlier ones. (Great video, by the way!)
how’s the weather up there? have you guys spotted any whales while sailing? if so, what kind(s)?
Margaret
Hi
I’m in a island called Svalbard, in a little town Called Ny Alesund. Theirs no painags and or arpiks, just moss and gravil. We’re not allowed to walk on the moss, just because it takes too long for it to grow back.

Hey B! I will be writing questions on behalf of the 7-12 students here at the school…they are on break and are coming back in right now…stay tuned!
Hey ya’s.. Start Writing.
Hey, Hows It Hangin?
HEY PENNY!!
Ok, I’m actually going to ask you this question, because i think you’ll have a completely different answer to those who came from England / Germany: Was the trip much different to how you expected it to be?
Ok B, Grade I actually have questions from more groups…Grade 5/6 asks: Whats the best thing about your trip so far?
So Far, ive been on a mountain, on a glacier, walking around, i ran out of medium, so im smoking some kind of weird cigs. im getting fat cuz we eat alot on the ship.
what do you miss most about your home (besides the obvious - friends, family)?
Hmm, the trip isnt as different as the ones back home, its just that the the ship is slower…
Het 5 and 6, the best part about this trip is that we all had a birthday party for suba and some of the other students samg to her nd she cried:)
I miss my dogs.
how has your project gone so far?
B…Glen here,
How does the weather compare in Svalbard to Chester in Sept?
Today it is -1C, and ice has started to form on Police Lake
Middle one says yo sister!!! Little one says your pretty!!!
Have other people on the boat been asking you lots of questions about Chesterfield Inlet?
Momma Donna is here too, she says your dogs are doing really good. Oh, twinkle still tries to hump my leg.
My Project..lol, i practly got the same answers as i got in science class with glen, but for my art project, i got nothing much out of it, cuz i thought of something, then i got mixed up cuz too many people tried to talk to me about it, then i complete for got what the original thing was.
I ever miss you guys!
Hi Mom!
So The weather Here Is Just Like Home, the lakes are freezing, but as for the ocean still no sing of ice forming. the temp is warm tho. we have no snow at all, just on the mountains..
sorry doriana - i should’ve introduced myself in the beginning. i work for Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) Canada’s national Inuit organization and i heard about your voyage thru a co-worker of mine, Melissa Tidlumaluk Irwin since i work with/for youth. she’s originally from Chester i believe. Her and I were suppose to tune into this Q/A thing together but i haven’t seen her in the office here this morning yet.
Have you noticed any changes related to climate change? (ice forming later, melting earlier, different bugs and birds…)
Glen The Weather Is Worm…Im Walking Around in Just A Sweater.
Well, as for the bugs…thank god theirs nothing here!!!!!!!!! but The Birds Are Still Here. The Guide Said They Might Still Be here because of a confusion, just cuz its still so worm.
Hurry Guys i dont have much time,. can you guys hurry up!
What kinds of wildlife have you seen so far? Anything like we have here in Nunavut/Chester?
What is the population of Svalbard? Could you see yourself living there?
Just The Same!, its just that ther a bit smaller, and the reindeer here are TINY!!! just fat, and their legs are like 1 foot long.. and their like 4 feet tall.
population..Longyearbyne 2 thousin,,,population Ny Alesund 100…
Weren’t you comparing the knowledge (on climate change) of your elders to that of the scientists up there? How did that go?
Are you teaching the others about your own culture? Are people asking a lot of questions about Inuit?
Svalbard doesnt have much wild life, just some little germs in the ocean to fish to seals to bears to reindeer, and then some birds
(Melissa’s questions were)
Doriana,
With you being from Chesterfiled Inlet - Nunavut, a witness to climate change, and a participating student on this awesome project, have you been able to share or teach your experiences or observations of climate change? Can you share any specific CC effects have you noticed in Igluligaarjuk?
How do you think CC will affect Inuit culture?
Last - will be be talking about your project over a cup of tea with the Prince of Whales William or Harry?! If so, send them my love!
I look forward to hearing more about you and your project…all the best!!
Melissa Tillumaluk Irwin
PS - could you contact me to do an interview for Inuktitut magazine when you get back to Canada? Take lots of pictures. thnx
Yeah people are asking alot about inuit, but not the ones im happy with, their always say..oh dorinana can peotect us from the polar bears, just give her a harpoon and well be ok…
Jess.
Yes that is my sceince projuce, but my art peoject is all mixed up.
but as for my science project i got, the same answers i got from back home.
How does what the elders say compare to what the scientists are saying about the changing climate?
What do the scientists think svalbard will look like in the future….big changes like here at home???
Hmm… The Elders are saying its all different and they cant tell or prodect the weather anymore.. as for the scientic, their saying, well have no more winters in chester by 2030….lol.JK…the scientic said they cant tell what exactly will happen in the future.
i have 5 minutes.
Last winter we got 40% of the snow we are suppose to get in April ( should have got it in nov, dec, jan)…have they noticed similiar changes with the amount of snow, and falling at different or wrong times of the year?
So did that kind of mess up your project, or are you changing it slightly?
I told you…its all the same as home.
Jess..
now that did mess it all up, cuz i didnt write it donw. and i cant remember it anymore.
