Thanks again Cape Farewell. Reflecting back on what I have done, what I have seen and the people I have met, is absolutely amazing. People back at home are mesmerised at the whole experience.

It all starts here in terms of climate change, but I’m sure everyone will change the attitude and actions not only in primary schools but in there community.

Hey, ich bins wieder, diesmal aus Ny- Alesund!!! Ich hoffe euch zu Hause in Hamburg geht es gut, mir super!!! Das Wetter ist sehr durchwachsen, mal Sonne, mal Schnee, aber immer kalt. Die Sonnenuntergaenge hier sind echt schoen. Ich fuehle mich hier wie in einer anderen Welt, ohne Stress, Laerm und aehnliches…einfach toll… Gestern war ein cooler Tag. Er geban mit dem Untersuchen von Plantkon im Labor in Ny Alesund, wo ich viel neues erfahren habe…mehr seht ihr auf dem Video, das heut Abend reingestellt wird…wir hatten sehr viel Spass bei dem Untersuchen. Und nach dem Lunch sind wir SHOPPEN geggangen!!! Haha, hoert sich witzig an, aber hier ist wirklich ein grosser Shop, der noerdlichste der Welt. Da mussten wir natuerlich etwas kaufen, wie zum Bespiel Pullis, Caps und Postkarten. Dann wurde wieder ein bisschen geseglt. Wir segelten zu einem Gletscher, die sind so unglaublich schoen!!! Nur leider verschwinden sie mehr und mehr. Wir haben es jetzt schon sehr oft “live” miterlebt, wie ein grosser Teil des Gletschers abbricht, das ist unbeschreiblich. Er stuerzt ins Wasser, es gibt grosse Flutwellen, die Geraeusche sind angsteinfloessend. Auf dem Rueckweg von dem Gletscher haben wir eine Seerobbe gesehen, die auf einer Eisscholle sass. Wir konnten ganz dicht ranfahren und tolle Fotos machen(kommen bald in meinen Blog) Dann haben wir zwei Voegel bei einem Kampf, oder einer Paarung, wir waren uns nicht ganz sicher….:D beobachtet, und ganz viele Hirsche auf einem Feld gesehen!
Sonst ist hier auch alles super: Am Montag hatten wir eine grosse Party weil Suba Geburtstag hatte! Wir hatten so viel Spass! Alle sind so nett, wir verstehen uns super toll und haben auch schon Adressen ausgetauscht. Ich will hier gar nicht mehr weg!!!
Naja, morgen gehts dann auch schon wieder zurueck nach Longyearbyen, von da dann nach Oslo und London. Und dann wieder zu euch nach Hamburg!!!
Ich freu mich aber auch schon darauf, euch alle wieder zu sehen!!!!:D

Hey guys,

I feel a bit exhausted today even though we haven’t exactly been trekking over mountains. I feel as if I have learnt so much from a media, art and science perspective. Speaking in front of camera has just turned into a routine; in fact it will seem strange back home with no one behind you with a microphone. I have learnt that no matter what is around you it can be made into art. Scientists have then taught me, about the balance between the environment and humans and how it needs to be stable.
I’m having an amazing time and I don’t want to come back!

Exploring the glacier

Hey everyone,
Today has been a weird day, full of mixed emotions. I felt horrified by the crashing of the glaciers. You could hear the thunderous sound of the ice splitting up. It was an amazing spectacle but I never expected to see it first hand. It made be reflect on what a wonderful world we do live in that we have demolished.

I finally got a good nights sleep so I feel much more exhilarated.

Exploring the Arctic

Hi Guys,
I’m finally here even though it is hard to believe. We flew from Heathrow to Stockholm after a hectic day of sightseeing. That evening we got around three hours sleep, because we had a flight at 6 am to Oslo. Then we had a connecting flight to Longyearbyen (capital of Svalbard) stopping shortly at Tromso (north Norway). However after a life long journey we have arrived and it is astonishing. You can’t visualise it at all the air, temperature and light is all completely different. This evening we had a tour of the town and visited museum learning about the history of Svalbard and its mining. We then met some of the children of Svalbard at a youth club. It was incredible how much we all have in common despite the place they live in.

On Thursday we met up with the children again but this at their school. It was a lovely building, with a gym, swimming pool, and football pitches. I was even contemplating living in Longyearbyen because it was Tax free and you don’t need a visa. Everyone was extremely welcoming. Today was also the day we came face to face with the Noorderlicht a 120 meter schooner. What a vessel it is!!

Sailing on it was a dream comes true, especially as we had the wonderful sunset in front of us.

Today we went on a shore excursion on a zodiac. We saw a dead reindeer and an arctic fox. But the real treat came later when we got back to the boat. The captain spotted a polar bear. Words can’t describe the emotions I was feeling. A moment I shall always cherish.

Hello everyone, hope you are all well.

I’m having a great time, but we are certainly being kept busy. We have had talks from a scientist, Mark Maslin who spoke about how we can tackle climate change. We also have had a series of workshop, the art and media being my favourite. It was a brilliant experience filming as well as being filmed and art workshop inspired me to do a series of art pieces. We also had a interview with T4 and we all had to act really funky.

Science Project
Liam wants to study the difference in salinity of the water from various sources: open sea / by a glacier / along the shoreline etc.The density of water is affected by temperature and salinity which are crucial components in the study of how ocean currents work. Any changes in ocean currents will affect the climate.

Art Project
Liam will collect footage and examples of all the science/art work done on the voyage to build into a “Science Road-show” that will be taken to primary schools and community groups in the local area. The aim is to convey the issues of climate change to others in the community.
